FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYMANTEC SECURITY SOFTWARE SHIPS ON NINE OF TOP 10 NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS WORLDWIDE

Windows Notebooks Dominate Mobile Market; Symantec Protects Them All

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 4, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security technology, today announced that nine of the world’s top 10 notebook vendors ship Symantec security solutions with their portable computers. According to research firm IDC, notebooks are the fastest growing PC market segment, and sales of notebooks have now surpassed those of desktops. Today, nine of the top 10 notebook vendors are based on the Windows operating system. Together, these machines claim 76.5 per cent of the worldwide portables market. Symantec security software ships on all nine of these best-selling systems in this fast-growing notebook market. Some of these top nine Windows-based notebook vendors include Acer, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, IBM, NEC Computers International, Sony, and Toshiba.
“The efficiency and productivity gains offered by mobile computing are driving consumers, small businesses, and corporations to invest in notebooks at an unprecedented rate,” said Matthew Moynahan, vice president of Product Management, Client and Host Security, at Symantec. “To ensure that these mobile computers are protected from online threats, and to mitigate risk to the systems and networks these computers integrate with, users must have effective security software in place. We are pleased to provide this Internet security protection to the thousands of individuals and businesses adopting mobile technology.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, within three years, 40 per cent of all workers will perform a significant part of their job outside of the office. A similar trend is seen by IDC, who estimates that two-thirds of the U.S. workforce will be considered mobile by 2006. However, paralleling this increased mobility is a rise in the number, complexity, and speed of threats to mobile systems that are outside the perimeter protection offered by the corporate security infrastructure. Blended threats put unprotected notebook computers-as well as the corporate networks to which they connect-at risk of infection and attack. Moreover, blended threats are a growing problem; 20 per cent more blended threats were reported during the first half of 2003 than in the previous six months, according to the most recent Symantec Internet Security Threat Report.
Symantec security solutions such as Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, and Norton Internet Security protect mobile users against the dangers of blended threats and other malicious code. Norton AntiVirus 2004 is the world’s most trusted antivirus, safeguarding notebook users from viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, as well as spyware, adware, and keystroke logging programs. Norton Personal Firewall 2004 automatically blocks malicious incoming and outgoing Internet traffic. Norton Internet Security 2004 combines the virus protection of Norton AntiVirus and the firewall and intrusion detection capabilities of Norton Personal Firewall with privacy and parental control capabilities and spam filtering technology.
