Growth of Inkjet MFPs and Colour Lasers Continues to Boost Australian Printer Market, Finds IDC

 • 25 August, 2004 14:40

NORTH SYDNEY, August 25th, 2004 – IDC has released figures on the Australian printer market for the second quarter of 2004. The total printer market shipped 470,000 units in Q2 2004, which represented a 9% increase quarter on quarter. The total printer market, which includes both inkjet single function and multifunction printers (MFP), single function laser and serial dot matrix (SDM) printers, grew by 12% when compared to the same period in 2003.

IDC reported growth for inkjet, laser and SDM printers in Q2. The continuous growth of inkjet MFPs over single function inkjet printers saw the inkjet MFP market reach 205,000 units in Q2 2004, up by 23% quarter on quarter. Inkjet single function printers however continued to decline from Q1 2004 with 190,000 units in Q2, a decrease of 2%.

“Inkjet MFPs have continued to steal market share from inkjet single function printers, and are just short of 50% share in the first half of 2004. In the second quarter, inkjet MFPs gained 52% of the total inkjet market, in comparison to 46% share gained in Q1 2004. It is expected that this trend will continue as vendors are shifting their focus away from single function inkjets to drive the uptake of inkjet MFPs”, said Su-Lin Ng, IDC Printer Analyst

“Consumers and small businesses are the primary target markets for inkjet MFPs and vendors will continue to educate and highlight the benefits to these markets. In Q2, vendors offered promotions such as bundling and cash-back offers to drive the demand in the inkjet market”, Ms Ng added.

The mono laser printer market reached 58,000 units in Q2, a growth of 6% over Q1. Colour laser printers passed the 10,000 unit mark shipping 12,000 units in Q2, a surge of 30% quarter on quarter.

“The rapid decline in prices for colour laser printers has definitely increased the demand by end users. Price continues to be a big driver for the uptake of colour laser printers especially in the small business market who can now print in colour using the laser technology at a lower purchase cost, where some prices have hit as low as under $800”, commented Ms Ng.

SDM printers also recorded growth of 4% from Q1 2004, shipping 3,400 units in Q2.

Despite overall market growth in Q2, IDC expects the second half of 2004 to be lower in unit shipments than the first half for single function printers, following the increased channel stock ups and end user purchases that have been made since Q1 2004. The upcoming federal election and the continuous decline in unit shipments of inkjet single function printers, is also expected to contribute to the slow-down in the total single function printer market in the second half. The outlook for inkjet MFPs, however, remains promising with yearly growth projected to be over 60% in 2004.
