Ernst & Young harness data growth with scalable SAN and server solution

 • 15 March, 2004 12:41

SYDNEY, Australia, 15 March 2004 Ernst & Young has partnered with Hewlett-Packard (HP) to develop a cast-iron solution for protecting its mission-critical data and creating a standardised server infrastructure.

The world-leading professional services firm has initiated an integrated rollout of HP's Storage Area Network (SAN) architecture for its storage and disaster recovery needs. HP's high performance Industry Standard Servers power the firm's Australian operations.

The deployment includes HP's high availability RAID solution, StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 5000 (EVA5000), and the first Asia Pacific deployment of HP's OpenView Continuous Access Storage Appliance (CASA), which provides data replication between homogeneous and heterogeneous devices in a SAN.

HP's high-density, two-way ProLiant DL380 G3 servers, and its four-way ProLiant DL580 G2 servers are providing a standardised and powerful computing platform. A total of 150 file and application servers are being deployed in the first phase of the rollout.

HP won the contract to supply its flagship StorageWorks disk array, the EVA5000 and CASA technology following a rigorous tender process late last year (2003). It follows HP's previous Ernst & Young tender win, to supply a standardised, high performance server platform.

HP's complete solution provides Ernst & Young with an easy-to-install, cost-effective and cohesive method for managing its burgeoning data storage needs, enabling the firm to consolidate its 10TB of Australian data in a robust and high availability RAID storage solution located in its Sydney-based computer room.

Ernst & Young recognised that with a centralised computer room in Sydney it needed to develop an off-site disaster recovery solution. The firm chose to cost-effectively redeploy its existing HP StorageWorks Modular SAN Array (MSA1000) technology, which it had used for its Lotus Domino and Microsoft SQL Server database platforms.

HP's CASA solution provides a vital link between the company-wide EVA5000, and two MSA1000s, with a fibre channel creating seamless and robust replication using snapshot, fibre channel mirrors and IP-based mirrors.

Ernst & Young's Chief Information Officer, Stephen Arnold said that the HP storage and server implementation provided a timely and end-to-end solution to the firm's critical data storage requirements.

"We have a continuing dependency on our data and we need a system that provides the most advanced method for managing mission-critical information," said Mr Arnold.

"We are increasingly using technology to develop, store and retrieve our company communications and this has led to a significant increase in the data we need to safely store.

"Additionally, our merger with Andersen Australia in 2002 led to a 50 per cent increase in data housed within the firm.

"As part of the merger we had to integrate Andersen's and Ernst & Young's operations into one seamless firm and this prompted us to review how we could efficiently develop a scalable infrastructure to meet our needs now and in the future.

"HP offered us the most cost-effective and end-to-end solution for our storage, disaster recovery and server needs," added Mr Arnold.

Andrew Manners, Director, Network Storage, Hewlett-Packard, said, "This Ernst & Young implementation provides yet another proof-point for HP's dominance in the enterprise storage area.

"With customers like Ernst & Young, HP remains uniquely placed to help companies with their storage needs, whether that be controlling capacity growth, protecting the company's intellectual property or managing data."
