Competition watchdog bites scammers

Up to 40 traders have been targeted in a crackdown on scam Internet sites undertaken by Australia's competition watchdog.

Following an international sweep last month, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) today said it has contacted 40 traders whose suspicious Web sites were identified as part of the crackdown.

ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said the results are very positive; around 60 per cent of the sites with alleged misleading representations have been resolved.

"This includes traders offering consumers full refunds, the removal of entire sites and the amendment or removal of misleading representations," he said.

The sweep involved 24 countries and targetted sites that promised goods and services deemed too good to be true, such as get-rich-quick schemes and so-called free offers.

The ACCC has launched a new brochure, titled Scams and Spam, to help people avoid getting caught out by Internet swindlers.
