DVD authoring software: Creator 2.0 Platinum

DVD authoring is becoming in--creasingly popular as many new PCs are coming with built-in DVD burners. The trouble with this trend is that the software bundled with most drives tends to be pretty inadequate.

This package from WinDVD is an integrated solution that takes you through the entire process of creating home DVDs. Rather than having to switch between different applications for capturing, editing and authoring, WinDVD Creator handles all these functions within a single, unified and pleasantly intuitive interface (see here for a screenshot).

The application is divided into four main sections, which you access by clicking the appropriate button along the top of the screen. You can switch between sections at any point. The first is called Capture, where you import video footage from any source — usually your camcorder or VCR. The same screen is used for importing still images, either from your hard drive or a digital camera, and sound clips. You then proceed to the Edit section, which is a fully-featured video editor.

Switch between clip and timeline views, and you can apply a wide range of transitions and titling effects. If you don’t want to output your project to a DVD, you can save your edited video to a file or back to DV.

Once you’re happy with your video you proceed to the Author screen, where you create an interface for your DVD with menu screens and titles. There’s a wide range of predesigned templates or you can design your own interfaces. The final step is the perhaps misleadingly-titled Make Movie screen, where you select the format to which you’re writing. WinDVD Creator supports VCD, SVCD and DVD on CD, as well as standard and high-capacity DVD. Either burn the content to a disc or save it to your hard disk for burning later.

In brief: WinDVD Creator 2.0 Platinum
This package provides a simple yet powerful approach to the most common tasks required by home DVD authors. It may be restrictive for experienced users, but it’s an excellent solution for amateur enthusiasts of video and DVD.
