Sophos Warns PC Users to Avoid Easter Exe's

 • 07 April, 2004 17:55

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
Sydney, 07 April 2004.

Sophos, a leader in protecting businesses from spam and viruses, has advised computer users to be especially wary of malicious programs over the Easter period.

Sophos's Technical Support Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Sean Richmond, said that with the extended long weekend many people will log onto their PC's at home and search around the net for entertainment or catch up on their personal email

"Computer users may feel it is safe to be more relaxed about their PC or laptop security during holiday periods like Easter, but this should not be the case,” he said

“There are many tempting links, emails and programs out there which may provide some fun Easter humour, such as an Easter Egg Hunt, which may in fact be attempting to steal personal details and banking information – such as the recent phishing attacks."

Sophos offers the following advice:

1. Don't act on web links or attachments sent to you in emails.

2. Block all Windows programs (EXE, DLL, SCR, BAT, PIF, CMD, etc.) files at your email gateway if you can. Because of the associated risks, there is almost no business case for distributing programs by email.

3. Filter outbound email with a product such as Sophos Pure Message or Sophos MailMonitor before it leaves your network. This is good "internet citizenship", because it limits the collateral damage you can do to the internet even if you become infected.

4. Update your anti-virus software regularly and frequently so you can identify the latest threats accurately. Using a product (such as Sophos Enterprise Manager or Remote Update) which can automate updates over the holiday period.

ends.
