Australian customers set to benefit from HP’s expanded UNIX and AlphaServer solutions

 • 19 August, 2004 09:42

SYDNEY, Australia, 18 August 2004 Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced enhancements to its UNIX® and AlphaServer range; driving continued support across its standards-based platforms, ramping up performance and providing Australian customers with a seamless evolutionary path.

The announcement includes the adoption of HP-UX 11I v2 on HP’s 9000 servers and new high-performance processors for HP’s AlphaServers, delivering flexibility and choice for customers. The announcement provides customers with a clear transition path to HP’s Itanium-based Integrity servers, which already run HP-UX 11i V2.

The new innovations include:

* A faster HP-UX 11i operating environment, including new features for running high-performance data centres and clustered environments and enabling customers to seamlessly manage Integrity and HP 9000 servers in the same environment.

* AlphaServer systems with new, faster processors and price reductions on current models.

* A new multi-OS (operating system) version of the HP Virtual Server Environment with more fine-grained control and two all-in-one virtualisation suites, integrated with high availability and utility pricing for service level assurance.

The continued deployment of HP AlphaServer systems is part of HP’s commitment to its OpenVMS and True64 UNIX customers, as customers’ prepare for their future transition to the Integrity server environment.

“HP’s continued industry-leading achievements in UNIX with HP-UX has paved the way for us to deliver the best technology capabilities across multiple operating environments,” said Stephen Bovis, Director Servers, HP South Pacific.

“This enables customers to reduce costs and simplify change through standardisation whilst significantly enhancing an organisation’s IT functionality.

“HP-UX 11i V2 is newly available on HP 9000 servers providing customers with a common release across both PA-RISC and Itanium based systems.”

HP empowers customers with Virtualisation
To help free up information technology (IT) capital for innovation, HP virtualisation capabilities will include a multi-OS offering for the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) for HP Integrity servers. HP’s VSE allows enterprises to achieve a greater return on IT investment by automatically optimising server resource utilisation in accordance with changing business priorities.

HP-UX for HP 9000
HP-UX 11i v2 also provides industry-leading data-centre enhancements, including 128-way support, virtualisation capabilities, high availability, disaster tolerance, mixed-architecture clustering, and up to a 25 per cent performance increase for HP 9000 customers upgrading from HP-UX 11i V1.

AlphaServer EV7 Processor
HP has implemented a faster EV7 processor at 1.15 GHz for the AlphaServer ES series systems and at 1.3 GHz for AlphaServer GS systems. Combined with memory price reductions, these enhancements deliver a significant price/performance improvement of up to 25 per cent.

HP continues to deliver on its commitment with OpenVMS v7.3-2 and the planned release of OpenVMS v8.2, available later this year which will support both AlphaServer systems and Integrity servers. To simplify installation and improve reliability, HP has bought forward the release of Tru64 v5.1B-2.
