Via Technologies is adding new cores to its lineup of microprocessors, allowing it to develop chips to power consumer electronics products, a company executive announced Wednesday.
Via has licensed Arm's ARM926EJ-S and ARM968E-S processor designs. Financial terms of the deal with Arm, a UK company that develops and licenses processor technology, were not disclosed.
The agreement allows Via to incorporate these processors into its own designs and products. The new additions broaden a lineup that's been built around the C7 processor, Via's most powerful chip.
"Using the Arm architecture, we can come up with more exciting devices," Via's vice-president of marketing, Richard Brown, said.
The types of devices that will use these chips include set-top boxes and personal media players, he said. Via did not indicate when products based on chips using the Arm designs would be available.
