Alphawest awarded Sun Infrastructure contract for Queensland University of Technology’s student management system

 • 05 July, 2004 13:49

SYDNEY, Australia, 5 July, 2004 - Alphawest (ASX:ALW) announced it has been awarded the contract to provide the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with a Sun Microsystems Server based solution to meet the growing demands of the University’s most mission-critical business application – their Student Management System.

For Alphawest, Sun Microsystems’ preferred partner for Education in Australia, this solution further demonstrates its commitment to the Education market.

Based upon the provision of two Sun Microsystems E6900 Enterprise Servers, this solution will provide separate production and ongoing development environments, together with a Disaster Recovery capability to minimise the risk to system availability through any unforeseen circumstances.

Mark Towers, Alphawest’s National Manager for Education said, “Alphawest is pleased to be selected to provide this solution to the Queensland University of Technology. Leveraging our strategic relationship with Sun Microsystems, this solution will enable QUT to both reduce any risks to the availability of their most critical information system, and deliver an increased level of service to its staff and student communities.

“With institutions continually facing increased demands to provide effective levels of performance, scalability and availability for their core business information systems, such as QUT’s Student Management System, the Sun E6900 provides the ideal platform – offering performance, scalability and built-in redundancy in a highly competitive package,” continued Mr Towers.

Andrew Boulus, National Manager Education and Research for Sun Microsystems said, “This represents a great win for Alphawest and Sun Microsystems. Sun’s renowned infrastructure solutions and ongoing commitment to open standards based network computing, together with Alphawest’s proven capability in the delivery, implementation and support of a broad range of IT solutions, provides a great opportunity for us to partner with Educational organisations of all levels.”

The Student Management System, implemented in June 2000, will be ported from the existing E4500 to the E6900 platform over the next few weeks and will be integrated into the University’s existing ‘QUT Virtual’ personalised information Portal. QUT Virtual provides staff and students with an easy to use method for accessing a number of the University’s online services - such as personal information, academic resources and administrative services in a secure web-based environment.

With a strategic partnership focussed on the education sector, Alphawest and Sun Microsystems are sponsoring and exhibiting at the QUESTnet 2004 Conference - Queensland Educational, Science and Technology network 2004, taking place in Cairns on 4-7 July 2004.
