Sophos's Spam Dirty Dozen Countries Named and Shamed

 • 26 August, 2004 07:17

Australia slips off Top 12 spam producers list

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against spam and viruses, has published its latest report into the countries from which most spam messages originate.

Researchers scanned all spam messages received at its global network of honeypots in the last month and have revealed the top twelve spam-producing countries. The United States remains by far the worst offender, exporting 43% of all spam.

The top twelve spam producing countries are as follows:

United States 43%

South Korea 15%

China (& Hong Kong) 12%

Brazil 6%

Canada 3%

Japan 3%

Germany 1%

France 1%

Spain 1%

United Kingdom 1%

Mexico 1%

Taiwan 1%

Others 12%

"While Australia may be in the top twelve at Athens we are proudly not in the top twelve countries for sending spam. The United States has retained its position as the highest originator of spam, whilst Australia has slipped out of competition," said Sean Richmond, Technical Support Manager, Sophos Australia and New Zealand. "With increased awareness of anti-spam techniques resulting in fewer open relays available and recent legislation that may have encouraged spammers to move their operations offshore, the volume of spam originating in Australia compared to the rest of the world has almost halved since February."

Sophos notes that the country with the most broadband connections in the world, South Korea, has consolidated its position as a leading producer of spam – almost tripling the percentage of spam originating from its shores since February.

"Research has indicated that up to 40% of all spam is being generated by broadband-connected PCs which have been compromised by hackers or virus writers, and subsequently pressed into service by spammers," said Richmond. "Up-to-date anti-virus software is a significant barrier against the spread of malicious code used to hijack innocent users' computers."

Sophos urges Australians not to purchase products advertised via spam and to deploy a consolidated solution at the email gateway which can protect against both spam and viruses.

"Of course, just because it didn't come from here doesn't mean that it won't arrive here," continued Richmond. "Australians receive a lot of spam just because we are a predominantly English-speaking nation. Though measures can be put in place to dissuade spammers from setting up in individual countries, these will not solve the global spam problem alone."
