Power failure in a switch was responsible for BigPond’s cable broadband being down for up to ten hours on Sunday.
The power failure in a switch caused a power spike, which then caused another switch to fail at 7am. This in turn caused a corruption in the authentication database required for customers to logon.
Customers in New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia were affected. The database was subsequently restored and customers were back online at 4:30pm in WA and SA, and 5pm in NSW.
Telstra estimates that 10,000 customers were impacted and they are carrying out a full technical investigation.
“The investigation will determine the cause of the incident and help us devise changes to prevent this happening again,” said a spokesperson for Telstra.
