Australian Colour Laser Market is Gaining Momentum, IDC Reports

 • 18 May, 2004 09:49

NORTH SYDNEY, May 18, 2004 – IDC has released figures on the Printer market for the first quarter of 2004. The total Printer market shipped a total of 430,000 units in Q1 2004 which showed a 10% surge in unit shipments quarter on quarter. This total figure includes both single function and multifunction (MFP) inkjet printers, laser and Serial Dot Matrix (SDM) printers. Similarly, in comparison to the same period in 2003, the total printer market grew by 33%.

IDC noted growth in most segments of the printer market including SDM printers, which increased by 33% from the previous quarter to 3,200 units in Q1 2004. Following from the growing demand of inkjet MFPs over single function inkjets in Q4 2003, inkjet MFPs recorded significant growth of 19% with 166,000 units in Q1 2004. Single function inkjets declined by 2% in units compared to Q4, recording a total of 195,000 units in Q1 2004.

The mono laser printer market reached 54,000 units in Q1, a growth of 27% over Q4, while colour laser printers hit 9,000 units, up by 34% quarter on quarter.

“The overall growth in the market mainly came from the vendors' pricing and promotional initiatives to push demand in the various segments of the printer market for the start of the new year. This is particularly evident in the colour laser printer market as vendors have offered attractive promotional incentives to the channel and end users. Aggressive price reductions were imposed and vendors have also engaged in advertising to increase their brand and product awareness in the colour space”, said Su-Lin Ng, IDC Printer analyst.

IDC expects strong growth to continue in the second quarter of 2004 with the financial year-end becoming a major driver for the printer market. “Competitive pressures from the colour laser printer and inkjet MFP market will play significant roles in driving positive growth in the quarter. Vendors have indicated that pushing colour laser printers will be a major focus and the introduction of a series of new models with competitive prices should increase the demand of the channel and end users in the market space”, added Ng.
