UWS teams up with Cisco

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) has launched a Cisco Academy aimed at enhancing the career and industry prospects of the public, and IT and computing students.

Opened in the lead up to this week’s National Science Week, and based at the university’s Campbelltown campus, the program will provide students with specific networking education.

The university has signed a strategic alliance agreement with Cisco in which the networking vendor will provide about $900,000 of funding, according to the manager of the program, UWS senior lecturer in IT, Dash Forghani.

He told ARN the program has been in the planning stage for the past few years. It was now certified by Cisco.

“The program is designed so that students can get a sound education and a hands-on experience with networking solutions,” he said. “Cisco is funding the recruitment of two permanent staff members that will be research and academic leaders.”

Forghani said the program ran on both a full- and part-time basis. Students had to complete 70 hours of theoretical and practical workshops.

“We are targeting anyone that wants to extend their knowledge in networking,” he said.
