Interwoven Introduces Industry’s First ECM Solution for Content Provisioning, Reinforcing Continued ECM Solution Leadership

 • 06 April, 2005 12:52

Interwoven Content Provisioning Solution Reduces IT Costs by 40 percent, Delivers Unprecedented Support for Key Compliance Requirements, and Speeds Application Time-to-Market

Sydney, Australia, April 6, 2005 – Interwoven, Inc. (Nasdaq: IWOV), provider of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions for business, today announced the introduction of the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution, continuing to deliver on the company’s proven strategy to bring industry-leading ECM solutions to market. As the first ECM solution designed specifically for IT Operations, the new Interwoven Content Provisioning solution enables IT Operations departments to standardise the aggregation, synchronisation and deployment of browser-based application assets from any development system to any application environment. By streamlining this previously resource-intensive process, the Interwoven solution is empowering IT Operations to slash provisioning costs by an average of 40 percent, bring new revenue-generating applications to market more quickly, and meet key compliance requirements.

A New Approach to Provisioning for Today’s Business Needs

As today’s enterprises increasingly depend on highly-targeted and content-rich websites to reach customers, partners and employees, IT Operations departments are often responsible for the management of an average of 200 Web-based applications* or more — many, if not all of which change multiple times daily. Compounding the situation, these increasingly complex applications run across highly-distributed production environments, often involving hundreds or over a thousand servers. However, as existing provisioning solutions were originally created for static mainframe or client-server application environments, they are unable to address the unique content provisioning challenges created by today’s complex browser-based environments including: frequency of change; incremental updates from multiple sources; secure distribution; synchronisation across data centres; and more. Further, due to the increasing strain created by emerging compliance requirements that affect IT Operations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley 404, enterprises are in need of a new approach to content provisioning.

Addressing these concerns, the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution is uniquely designed to provide IT Operations with full control over the provisioning of browser-based application assets. As a result, early adopters have found that they can on average support hundreds of applications across their organisations, while increasing change capacity ten-fold and shortening the provisioning process from days to often hours. Delivering reporting, configurable workflows, version control and rollback capabilities to streamline the release process, the Interwoven solution is also completely open, allowing IT Operations to aggregate content from any ECM or Source Code Management (SCM) system and deploy it to any application environment.

“Content provisioning is a natural extension for ECM vendors,” said Jeff Phillips, senior analyst at Doculabs Inc. “As enterprises seek refuge from an overwhelming volume of application change requests and emerging regulatory pressures created by today's Web-based application environment, the need is greater than ever before for a sophisticated approach to how application assets are deployed. With its new content provisioning solution, Interwoven has effectively answered this call, and it will be interesting to see how the broader ECM market follows suit to address this challenge.”

The Interwoven Content Provisioning solution is generally available in early April 2005.

Further information

In today’s competitive and Web-driven business climate, the need for companies to bring to market browser-based applications quickly, accurately, and cost-effectively is great. And, as these applications become more complex, they require a blended provisioning approach for both code and content. As a result, content provisioning is playing an increasingly critical role in helping companies address this challenge by standardising the process by which IT Operations departments can aggregate, synchronise and deploy application code and content change requests from developers to application testing, staging and production environments.

Addressing Key Compliance and Business Challenges

The Interwoven Content Provisioning solution is enabling enterprises to address key mandates specified by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act for securing, controlling and documenting the flow of application code, content and configurations. To address specific Sarbanes-Oxley 404 “Manage Change” requirements, the Interwoven solution captures a complete audit trail of the provisioning process, including who initiated changes and the success or failure of a deployment. Additionally, to satisfy specific record retention requirements, the Interwoven solution enables IT Operations to easily capture exact versions of applications before they are provisioned, creating a legally-defensible and historical account of the state of each application.

In addition to compliance, the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution is addressing key business challenges relating to IT cost and application time-to-market. With the rise of a more distributed IT infrastructure, many organisations are now faced with a growing synchronisation pain as IT groups spend countless hours checking and re-checking deployment scripts to ensure that application updates “go live” in unison across every server. The Interwoven solution replaces outdated update methods based on manual FTP or rsync scripts with a highly-automated system that eases the burden on IT personnel while reducing the amount of resources previously required. Further, as IT Operations increasingly receive change requests from a broader spectrum of developers and business users across the organisation, the Interwoven solution provides an automated change deployment process, creating a more agile, real-time application environment for the rapid delivery of new revenue-generating applications.

Customers are eagerly embracing the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution. Said Frank Enfanto, vice president of healthcare service delivery at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts: “Web applications have become increasingly essential to our business, but the challenge has been to manage this highly-complex provisioning environment in a way that empowers people across the organization to contribute content effectively, ensure the continuous operation of all our applications and achieve full regulatory compliance. The Interwoven Content Provisioning solution can help us achieve all of these goals—ensuring that our Web applications provide continuous service to customers and providers, while enabling us to meet the dynamic business needs of our own organisation.”

“Just as compliance regulations, inefficient business processes and the need to maintain a competitive edge have all contributed to the growing demand for ECM, so too are these business issues driving a new approach to content provisioning and the extension of ECM solutions into IT Operations,” said Miles Kelly, director of marketing for IT Solutions at Interwoven. “As companies grapple with the high frequency of change created by today’s browser-based application environments, combined with the increasing challenge of staying competitive through agility and speed, Interwoven is pleased to offer the first ECM solution specifically designed to empower IT Operations to address these business-critical challenges.”

The Interwoven Content Provisioning solution is comprised of new versions of the following products as well as services:

• Interwoven ControlHub Server Software — Acting as a “traffic hub” for application code and configurations, file and database content, ControlHub delivers a platform on which change sets can be aggregated and coordinated. Robust workflow streamlines the provisioning process and records all approvals and provisioning activities to ensure accountability. ControlHub also provides an application state model, maintaining exact snapshots of target applications so that an application can be quickly rolled back to a previous version for IT compliance, or to prove the state of an application at a particular time in the past.

• Interwoven OpenDeploy Distribution Server Software — OpenDeploy makes it simple to aggregate and securely distribute code and content from anywhere to any network destination point—including from any file, SCM, or ECM system to any network location, including Web servers, file servers, database servers, application servers, or network-edge devices. OpenDeploy also extends the provisioning process from development to production release through source and target connectors. OpenDeploy source connectors include IBM ClearCase®, Microsoft® Visual SourceSafe™, and others, while target connectors include IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic™ and Microsoft®.

• Education and Consulting Services — Tailored consulting and education services complete the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution. The Interwoven Client Services Organisation provides best practices, strategic analysis, implementation experience, and education courses and consulting to help organisations assess their existing content provisioning processes, lay the groundwork for the most effective content provisioning implementation, and build the internal expertise they need to support the solution going forward.
