NEC Enhances Environmental Measures for its “Refreshed PC” Business

 • 07 April, 2005 11:23

NEC Corporation (NEC) today announced the launch of an “NEC Refreshed PC Afforestation Project” to further enhance its measures toward protection of the environment. “Refreshed PC” is the brand name for NEC PCs that NEC buys back from users and then resells after they are checked and cleaned. Currently, “Refreshed PCs” are only available in Japan.

The new project, which consists of NEC contributing to afforestation activities by planting new trees for each PC that it buys back, will start from April 1, 2005. This is the first ever approach by the IT industry to carry out a project that involves collaboration between recycling of PCs, leading to a decrease in waste materials, and afforestation, which aids in the reduction of CO2 emissions.

NEC carries out afforestation activities on Kangaroo Island in South Australia every year in August. This year’s afforestation activities will correspond to the number of PCs that NEC contracts to buy back from users between April 1 and July15 this year with the final number of applicable computers being finalised by July 31, 2005. The trees to be planted will either be Eucalyptus or Acacia.

There is approximately 100kg of CO2 emissions associated with the manufacturing of each new PC. However, with “Refreshed PCs” there is no assembly process required, and this thus contributes to a decrease in the total amount of CO2 being emitted into the environment.

Moreover, due to the afforestation activities that will be carried out this summer, an approximate 20kg of CO2 emissions will be absorbed by the newly planted trees per PC manufactured this year. Taking into consideration the amount of CO2 prevented from being released into the environment and the amount being absorbed by the trees, this will result in a total decrease of 120kg of CO2 emissions per PC per year. In addition, assuming 20 years of plant growth, approximately 500kg of CO2 emissions will be prevented from being released into the environment due to this afforestation project. (100kg from the manufacturing process of each PC + 20kg absorbed by the trees X 20years = 500kg.)

The shipment estimation for “NEC Refreshed PCs” is approximately 20,000 to 30,000 units for the fiscal year, ending March 31, 2005. Assuming 20 years of growth of the newly planted trees, a reduction of between 10,000 to15,000 tons of CO2 emissions will be achieved through this afforestation project.

The Kyoto Protocol, which came into effect in February 2005, calls upon a reduction in CO2 emissions to prevent global warming. This project acts as a preventive measure against such global warming, as well as actively demonstrating how NEC can contribute to an overall decrease in CO2 emissions.
