PC Tools Cracks the code on latest Web Hijackers

 • 20 April, 2005 00:42

New, free software utility protects PC users from being deceived by spyware that secretly hijacks web links.

SYDNEY, April 19, 2005 – PC Tools, creator of the award-winning anti-spyware software, Spyware Doctor, today announced the release of a groundbreaking product called Hijack Guard that protects PC users from the next generation of Web hijacker threats and is available free at www.pctools.com/hijack-guard/.

These latest Web hijacker threats target average online shoppers as they browse the world’s largest Internet search engines, online stores, news sites, software download sites or any other popular site. The threats burrow deep into users’ PCs, often concealing themselves from detection, and insert their own Web links when shoppers view targeted content or search for particular topics. When shoppers mistakenly click on the illegitimate link, the browser is directed to another, often undesirable, site in its place. PC Tools’ new Hijack Guard detects and disables these threats on the shopper’s PC – protecting both the shopper and commercial Web site.

“We estimate that as much as 20 percent of a given site’s traffic can be redirected to another site, chosen by the hijacker,” said Simon Clausen, CEO of PC Tools. “The redirected site could be obscene or fraudulent, and there’s nothing that can be done about it from the Web site as the threat itself is housed on the user’s PC. Spyware threats are now focusing on online consumer shopping carts and other high-risk Internet commerce sites, particularly from consumers in the United States, as that is where the most profit is to be made.”

Unlike traditional pop-up distractions, customers are unknowingly assaulted while they browse their favorite sites. An ordinary key word search for a new car could likely result in a link that takes you to the spyware’s fraudulent site. These faulty links are programmed to replace the top results in that search and don’t look any different than other links on the same page. Additionally, these fraudulent links affect not only the online shopper but also the companies whose customers are stolen from them. PC Tools also expects to see this new technology to be implemented in phishing scams in the near future, where the user would be on the correct site but the login request could be redirected, thwarting current anti-phishing protection.

Companies are encouraged to protect their customers by hosting the free download link on their site and urging customers to use it on their PCs. Additionally, Web sites, software publishers and ISPs can freely distribute Hijacker Guard without charge. Hijack Guard includes a subset of the protection available in the PC Tools product, Spyware Doctor, which can be found at www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/.
