Conference surveys the new blogging world order

 • 06 May, 2005 16:43

Australian Democrats deputy leader and enthusiastic blogger Senator Andrew Bartlett will give a personal and political perspective of the expanding universe of weblogs at Australia's first conference on blogging in Sydney this month.

The online journal, or (we)blog, has become a global vehicle for everything from hard-hitting behind-the-news commentary to education and learning technologies, public confessions, pop culture enthusiasms, artistic endeavours and political opinion from all points of the compass.

Senator Bartlett will discuss blogs and politics in Australia and globally at BlogTalk Downunder, organised by the Centre for Language and Literacy at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Senator Bartlett said the long-term value of blogs in politics was very much an open question – something of an experiment in progress.

There were hopes blogs could address some of the current failings of the political process – like secrecy and the availability of information, the lack of accountability and the "dumbing down" of political discourse through the media.

"It is reasonable to argue that blogs can bring significant benefits to our political processes and people's engagement with and understanding of political and policy issues," he said. "However, how real and how influential these benefits may end up being is very debatable."

BlogTalk Downunder is being held at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Rushcutters Bay from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 May. It aims to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners and bloggers to discuss the use of weblogs both as a social and technical phenomena.

Invited speakers include Rebecca Blood, widely regarded as the world's foremost authority on weblogs; Thomas Burg, the initiator of BlogTalk, the first international conference on weblogs in Europe in 2003; and Mark Bernstein, president and chief scientist of Eastgate Systems, a pioneer company in the development of hypermedia and hypertext writing tools.
