FileMaker Pro 7.0 Preview

FileMaker Pro 7.0 is aimed at the small business and mid-range corporate markets as well as single users or small workgroups. It provides all the features you’d require from a relational database package including a database engine, ad hoc interactive tools and the ability to develop custom applications.

With its simple macro/scripting language and great format editing, it takes just a few minutes to knock up a basic database. You can either walk through a simple design process that involves naming and defining fields in a dialogue box, or you can use (and edit) any of the 30 predefined templates, which cover the usual bases such as time billing and contact management. If you need to access databases in other programs, FM Pro 7.0 can import files in a host of formats including comma- and tab-separated values, Excel, Lotus 1-2-3 and HTML. The file format (and hence suffix) has changed from FP5 to FP7, but converting or accessing older files presents no problems. Other improvements include the ability to have more records and fields per file, named paths to external files, and batch file conversion. Thankfully, the previous 2GB file size ceiling for a single database has been removed. A 30-day trial is available at the site.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.

I’d recommend a Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 and the new Windows 10 to anyone who needs to get serious work done (before you kick back on your couch with your favourite Netflix show.)
