FalconStor's Next Generation VirtualTape Library Solution Unifies Tape and Disk Backup

New Continuous Disk Backup Functionality Delivers Rapid Recovery with Reduced Data Loss and Minimal Downtime to Help Customers Achieve RPO and RTO

Sydney, Australia – 30 May, 2005--Continuing its efforts to deliver innovative, real-world solutions that meet the needs of today's IT community, FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage software solutions, has expanded its award-winning VirtualTape Library software solution to include both a traditional tape-based backup model as well as a new continuous disk-based backup model.

As a unified disk- and tape-based backup and recovery platform, FalconStor's VTL solution will now offer continuous or scheduled data replication, user initiated backup and file/system recovery, as well as support for remote boot via iSCSI HBA or PXE. The new version of FalconStor VTL will deliver the advanced functionality required by IT administrators to achieve both recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO), including rapid recovery, reduced data loss, and minimal downtime, in a single solution.

FalconStor's VTL already addresses the backup window challenge by leveraging the speed of disk while consolidating the management and provisioning of backup resources. The addition of Continuous Disk Backup (CDB) transforms FalconStor's VTL into a single platform for tape and disk-based backup for rapid, reliable data recovery.

"Data protection is crucial in today's business environment, and while the backup process remains critical, companies should place as much, if not more emphasis on the recovery process," said Peter Gerr, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "FalconStor's combined tape and disk-based VTL solution gives users the ability to dial up or down the granularity and frequency of data protection, addressing both the backup and recovery window issues in one unified solution."

The disk-based backup model of VTL enables CDB to journal incoming information, while combining it with application aware snapshots, providing numerous known good points in time. The resulting replica contains application, database and email data in a stable state, and allows users to quickly recover business critical data as needed. With the addition of CDB, VTL's comprehensive range of rapid data recovery capabilities also includes support for remote boot recovery through an iSCSI or Fibre Channel HBA or PXE, as well as full system restore via a recovery CD. The new CDB software option also reduces the administrative burden on IT managers and staff by empowering users to initiate full disk or file recovery through rollback or mounted snapshots.

"Information is the lifeblood of the global business community. The challenge is to recover the maximum amount of lost or corrupt data in the shortest time possible, using systems that are cost-effective, non-intrusive and practical to implement," said John Lallier, FalconStor vice president of technology. "Our VTL solution has been widely embraced by partners and customers alike, and provides them the ability to continue with a traditional tape-based backup procedure, while giving them the foundation and capacity to leverage their existing investment for continuous data backup."

FalconStor's next generation VTL is highly scalable, offering centralised, continuous or scheduled data replication across the enterprise, from branch offices to a corporate data center. The company is continually working with leading solution providers, such as COPAN Systems and MaXXan Systems, to deliver storage solutions for all market segments on a global basis, based on FalconStor VirtualTape Library software.

"It's not just about backup any more. Our customers are telling us that it's about a confluence of information access, data protection, disaster recovery, regulatory compliance and business continuity. FalconStor's continuous disk backup feature addresses the growing needs of our customers. COPAN Systems' MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) combined with FalconStor software enables businesses to unlock the value of their long-term data."

Ravi Chalaka, Vice President of Marketing
MaXXan Systems, San Jose, CA

"We're seeing incredible traction on our SVT100 virtual tape appliances, powered by FalconStor technology, since they seamlessly integrate with our customers' existing backup procedures. And, the ability and flexibility to quickly recover business data at such a granular level is a huge business advantage. Introducing continuous disk backup through VTL appliances will allow them to serve as the storage backbone of an on-demand computing environment."
