Destra buys GPM to boost business base

Destra has boosted its business customer base with the recent acquisition of ISP, GPM. The broadband, hosting, VPN and wireless provider was purchased for $600,000 through a mixture of cash and shares.

Destra CEO, Domenic Carosa, said the acquisition would also provide access to a range of complementary products and services.

"The core objective was to add more revenue and customers," he said. "So in that way it's similar to our Techex acquisition of last year."

The high percentage of corporate customers held by GPM was also attractive, Carosa said.

With a new set of complementary skills on board, Destra would also be in a better position to develop new services for its current push on the business market.

"We are looking at expanding our ASP range over the next few quarters," he said. "Pay-per-month services are something we see as a big growth area for SMEs in Australia."

Its IT services division would also be rebranded as Destra Business, with an updated site to be launched within months, Carosa said.

On top of business services, Destra's digital media divisions, which facilitated the online distribution of digital music, had also been kicking goals, he said.

"We now backend all the big brands in Australia, so we are moving towards making video downloads available too," he said. "The Australian music market is worth $1 billion per year and digital downloads are less than one per cent of that, so there's still huge potential."

Predicting further acquisitions and consolidation across the sector in the next year, Carosa said the ongoing priority for ISPs was to get big quick.

"We are being aggressive as acquisition provides greater economies of scale and because the market is moving toward a one-stop-shop approach for all the services," he said.
