Connex Melbourne selects Alphawest IT Managed Services

 • 18 July, 2005 14:18

Alphawest today announced it has been awarded a multi-year contract by Connex Melbourne to provide a range of IT Managed Services.

Under the contract, Alphawest will support 2,500 users and the staff and infrastructure at approximately 100 railway stations with managed services, based on IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and other established best practice methodologies. Connex Melbourne (Connex) will be provided with continuous 24x7 monitoring and management of its core IT infrastructure, full service desk, daily on-site support personnel and all desk-side services.

The company will also provide internal and external firewall management, web server management and security management - all core Alphawest competencies.

Alphawest’s Chief Executive Officer, Garry Henley said, “This contract further demonstrates that our approach to flexible, selective managed services is being positively received by our customers. With Alphawest providing the IT operating platform Connex can place more emphasis on developing their strategic business IT initiatives, rather than being sidetracked by day-to-day operational issues.

“Further, by combining a range of skills and capabilities from our Victorian office, National Service Centre and Network Operations Centre, Connex gains a larger, dedicated team of skilled professionals with deep IT skills – without the time constraints required to manage them.”

Connex is part of a worldwide organisation specialising in the operation of passenger transport service. Following completion of its initial franchise, in 2004 Connex was awarded the contract by the Victorian Government to operate the entire 15-line Melbourne metropolitan train network, providing more than 2.5 million passenger journeys each week.

Connex sought an IT Service provider who offered the flexibility, skills and commitment to meet their IT Services delivery and support needs.

Tony Pine, IT Infrastructure Operations Manager at Connex said, “Connex invited proposals from a pre-defined group of providers in order to select the most appropriate IT service partner with the skills, commitment and capability to deliver the level of service we need.

“After close evaluation of the options, we selected Alphawest based on their proven track record, depth of talent locally and in their remote centres, deep understanding of our needs and commitment to being the ultimate guardians of our IT environment. The Alphawest team demonstrated integrity, professionalism and commitment throughout the evaluation process - all key success factors for the close working relationship we were looking for.”

Mary Powderly-Hughes, CIO at Connex concluded, “With Alphawest providing a stable and resilient platform, we look forward to providing higher levels of service to our customers, as well as deriving increased value. It is refreshing to find an IT Services company that’s as passionate about their business as we are about transport.”
