CUSCAL Outsources Email Security To MessageLabs To Beat The Spam and Virus Odds

 • 19 July, 2005 09:55

MessageLabs, the world’s leading provider of email security and management services, today announced that it has been selected by Australian financial services provider Credit Union Services Corporation Australia Limited (CUSCAL), to protect its 300 email users from viruses and spam.

CUSCAL is an approved deposit-taking institution regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA). CUSCAL services the majority of Australia's credit unions, both as an industry body and as the provider and aggregator of a comprehensive range of specialist financial services products.

CUSCAL first approached MessageLabs to help it tackle increasing levels of spam using MessageLabs Anti-Spam Service, which is already adding value to the financial institution’s environment by blocking almost 100 per cent of all spam.

MessageLabs Anti-Spam Service identifies and re-routes spam before it reaches the corporate network, providing administrators with multiple routing options and an end user quarantine service. The service uses a combination of MessageLabs unique predictive intelligence technology Skeptic™, signature management and client configurable approved and blocked sender lists.

During a trial period of MessageLabs Anti-Spam Service, it also tested the MessageLabs Anti-Virus Service, which it found to be very effective in stopping all viruses. The company decided to implement both services to provide a comprehensive barrier against unwanted threats outside its corporate network at the Internet level. This is the first line of defence in its multi-layered approach to security.

"With the increasing level and sophistication of threats, companies must take a more proactive, multi-layered approach to protecting their data and online identities,” said Andy Lake, director of partners for MessageLabs Asia Pacific. “Managed email security services are increasingly becoming an attractive option for financial institutions as a first line of defence. Keeping email threats outside corporate networks also frees up bandwidth and helps businesses to manage and reduce risk.”

Using a combination of patented and other leading technology, MessageLabs monitors, tracks and combats threats, whether they are known or not. Its services are based on Skeptic predictive intelligence technology, scanning all incoming and outgoing emails at the Internet level, without the need for CUSCAL to purchase or manage additional hardware or software. This delivers a predictable and low total cost of ownership (TCO).

A central web-based management console allows CUSCAL to view data and statistics on the financial institution’s use of MessageLabs’ services. Administrators can configure email security controls to suit particular user requirements and can specify policies controlling outbound and inbound traffic, providing a balance between safety and useability. This gives CUSCAL greater control over the email content reaching its network and helps to ensure it meets acceptable email usage policies.
