EMC and Softek Announce Industry's Only Software for Online Dataset Migration within Mainframe Environments

 • 26 July, 2005 12:07

Jointly Developed Logical Data Migration Facility (LDMF) Software Non-Disruptively Moves Mainframe Datasets for Enterprise Mainframe Customers; Saves Weeks of Data Conversion Time Over Traditional Methods

Sydney, Australia, July 26, 2005 - EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management; and Softek Storage Solutions Corporation, the leading provider of nondisruptive data migration software for multivendor environments, today jointly announced the new EMC/Softek Logical Data Migration Facility (LDMF) software, the industry's first data migration software that relocates data nondisruptively at the dataset-level on storage arrays operating within mainframe environments.

Integrating technologies from both companies, the LDMF software transparently moves datasets on-line from one volume to another and automatically updates catalogue information to reflect the change in location. As the only on-line alternative to performing manual copies or using other utilities which require lengthy application downtime, the LDMF software enables mainframe administrators to more efficiently relocate information onto new storage or storage tiers, to nondisruptively optimise volume utilisation and performance, and to consolidate datasets into fewer volumes to minimise resource consumption.

"Automating the process of converting data between volume sizes solves a huge problem for mainframe storage managers," said Dianne McAdam, senior analyst and partner, Data Mobility Group. "Today, converting from small 'Mod 3' to larger 'Mod 9' or 'Mod 27' volumes is a complex and error-prone process that requires significant application downtime. Because of the mission-critical nature of mainframe applications, scheduled downtime windows are few and far between, which stretches out data migration projects into several weeks, if not months. The demand for an on-line solution, such as LDMF, is very high across the mainframe user community."

"LDMF changes the rules for mainframe data migration," said Amena Ali, senior vice president, worldwide marketing and product strategy, at Softek. "Applications remain on-line during the conversion process, which significantly reduces the overall project timeframe with less required staff resources. This reduces the potential for costly outages and added expenses of lease cost overruns."

"The new EMC/Softek LDMF software further reinforces EMC's commitment to providing mainframe customers with innovative technology that enables them to better manage their information throughout its lifecycle," said Tom Joyce, vice president of platforms marketing, at EMC. "When combined with EMC's new Symmetrix DMX-3 Series storage systems, EMC/Softek LDMF will help our customers minimise the operational disruption of migrating information and allow them to quickly and efficiently leverage the cost benefits of massive consolidation and tiered storage within the array."

"LDMF will improve data availability and make it easier for enterprises to migrate and tier their mission-critical data. Softek, with its leadership and expertise in data migration and EMC, with our Catalog products, were natural partners to develop and bring this product to market," he added.

In addition to migrating data to larger volumes and arrays, the LDMF software is useful for other complex processes such as reclaiming unit control blocks (UCBs) and dataset-level workload balancing.

The LDMF software is expected to be generally available in September. Softek will sell LDMF through its direct sales force in North America and Europe. Typical installations are expected to be priced in the low US$100,000s. EMC and Softek will also collaborate on marketing and customer support activities.
