IDC Finds Users Are Confused About Utility Computing

 • 29 July, 2004 14:37

NORTH SYDNEY, July 29th, 2004 – IDC has recently completed the third study in the Buying Behaviour and Trends report series covering the local enterprise (250+ employees) market. The report titled "Business Selection Criteria for Server Computing Environments” focuses on server vendor preference, market trends, and forecast analysis affecting the enterprise market in Australia. Key findings from the study were that the uptake of grid/utility computing is expected to be minor from an overall market perspective and that there are three key factors for server purchase decisions over the next twelve months.

Assuming that system reliability and quality are important, IDC has found that the top three factors for Server purchases over the coming year are:
1) Total cost of ownership (TCO)
2) Customer service
3) System stability

Margaret Banaghan, IDC Senior Analyst for AP Servers and Workstations, said "With the entrenchment of Industry Standard Servers in the marketplace the barriers to switch from one server vendor to another has become increasingly less complex. Vendors must continue to invest heavily in their customer service levels to maintain their existing customer base, particularly those in the industry standard x86 server marketplace."

IDC found that a small number (6.8%) of survey respondents indicated they were moving to, or planning to move towards a grid computing model. Interestingly, more than double this number (15.2%) of respondents indicated they did not know if their organisation was moving towards this model.

"The task of educating vendors on grid/utility computing and initiating cultural change within larger organisations in Australia still remains. The true benefits and value proposition of the model must be pushed even further as end users from the survey are still generally confused as to the concept of grid computing" said Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst for PC Hardware.
