A sinister new Web site is posing as a source of games, competitions and free downloads to snare personal and financial information.
The site is designed to look like Yahoo Games, warned Adam Biviano, Senior systems engineer with security software company Trend Micro.
Biviano said the phishing site was being promoted via messages sent over Yahoo Instant Messenger. The messages include no information beyond the link http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/forun_amex/login.html, which Trend Micro is advising people NOT to click.
The Web site is being investigated by Trend Micro, which issued a warning today that the phishing site displayed bogus copyright and privacy statements, making it very difficult for the average person to determine its authenticity.
Biviano said that this attack could herald a disturbing new trend for phishers, which have traditionally haunted online banking and auction sites.
"This is an example of how phishers are always trying out new devices to trick an ever growing audience," he said.
Trend Micro claims that it sees 300 to 600 new phishing attacks every day, and that phishing currently makes up 20 per cent of all malware.
