Magdalene Catholic High School deploys AutoCell-based wireless network

 • 20 October, 2005 12:06

Magdalene Catholic High School, a prominent and progressive school in Narellan, NSW, has implemented a new wireless network based on NETGEAR AutoCell technology, designed to enhance student learning and improve teacher efficiency and effectiveness.

The network comprises 14 NETGEAR WG302 Wireless Access Points featuring AutoCell software - a new RF management technology that maximises network security, management and performance in high-density, high interference environments. Using AutoCell, the access points automatically adjust signal levels, selecting channels and balancing the traffic load among all available points to avoid interference and ensure optimal network coverage.

“AutoCell played a big part in the final purchasing decision,” said Steve Bayliss, Computer Technician, Magdalene Catholic High School. “I was very impressed with its simple web-based control and its ability to independently manage the wireless load. Using AutoCell we can view the status of all access points and look at how many clients are connected to them at any given time. We can also log on from any computer on the LAN, which makes management much easier.”

Local reseller AVC was instrumental in the purchasing and deployment of the new equipment, working closely with the school to find them a solution that met its specific requirements.

“We’ve worked with AVC for more than five years, so we really looked to them for input when we first considered implementing a wireless network,” said Bayliss. “Together we opted for NETGEAR because we felt its products were best suited to our infrastructure.”

The school’s recent investment in 60 notebooks for students prompted the need for a wireless network, giving students remote access to the school network, Internet resources and multimedia content, including streaming audio and video. The school plans to double the number of notebooks in 2006, so had to ensure the network would continue to deliver fast and secure mobile access to teaching resources both now and in the future.

“Overall, NETGEAR’s AutoCell technology has significantly reduced the amount of time required to manage the wireless component of the network. We can monitor any or all access points from the AutoCell console, and assess many other facets of the network, including devices connected to each access point.”

Over half the school grounds currently feature NETGEAR access points. Based on the success of the current roll out, the school is now looking to deploy further access points throughout the rest of the campus, ensuring that students and staff can benefit from continual and uninterrupted wireless network access.
