Wholesale partnership expands VoIP

People Telecom will deliver voice over IP (VoIP) to wider Australia through a wholesale partnership formed this week with engin.

The arrangement will see People Telecom transfer all existing and new VoIP customers over to engin's network. The telco previously offered VoIP via its own SIP server, but it was only available to customers in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.

"We decided if we were to expand right around Australia we'd be better off to partner with someone whose core business was VoIP," People Telecom CEO, Ryan O'Hare, said. "We are no longer limited to just three states and will have a product available Australia-wide with many different phone numbers and IP addresses but somebody else can manage the network."

O'Hare said that although People Telecom's focus would remain on business-to-business, VoIP is growing steadily.

"We currently have over 1000 on our network, and another 100 have signed up just this week," he said. "This partnership will open VoIP up to a lot of our resellers who would not otherwise have had access to it."

CEO of engin, Ilkka Tales, said the partnership signified engin's growing presence in the wholesale business.

"In addition, it demonstrates that high profile and rapidly growing companies like People Telecom recognise that there is no need to build their own VoIP networks and that partnering with engin makes commercial sense," he said.

engin currently has 17 wholesale partners including People Telecom, ispOne, aaNet, SkyNetGlobal, and Connecting the Community Program.

The partnership is one of several moves that have taken place recently in the VoIP space. In October, Netgear and engin announced a co-branding partnership where their products are bundled and sold through Harvey Norman and the channel. Chariot this week announced it plans to roll out its VoIP services to regional areas in December. (See story: http://www.arnnet.com.au/index.php?id=1477962346)

GOtalk CEO, Steve Picton, announced that GOtalk VoIP would be able to service more than 200 geographic areas across all Australian states by early December.

"Gotalk prepaid and postpaid VoIP services come with a geographic number enabling people to receive as well as make phone calls to fixed lines for 9.9 cents untimed," he said. "For $5 a month our customers will also be able to add additional numbers."
