LG.Philips, Kodak to jointly evaluate OLED tech

South Korean LCD (liquid crystal display) maker LG.Philips LCD and Eastman Kodak have signed an agreement to jointly evaluate and perhaps develop active matrix OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology together, according to a company statement.

"This is the first stage of a strategic alliance between the two companies," said Bang-Soo Lee, a spokesman for LG.Philips, in Seoul. "We expect to expand this [partnership] to joint development of new technologies and products in the future."

OLED is seen as a key technology for future displays, because it consumes less power and offers higher contrast and faster response times than current display technology. Active-matrix OLED, or AMOLED as it is also known, is a version of the technology being developed for larger displays such as computer monitors and televisions.

Under terms of the agreement announced Wednesday, LG.Philips and Kodak will jointly evaluate technologies for mobile displays and examine business opportunities together, including the development and supply of AMOLED technology and products, the statement said.

The deal between LG.Philips and Kodak comes after a similar partnership ended between Kodak and Sanyo Electric.

In late January, Kodak sold its stake in an OLED joint development project to partner Sanyo. The two companies had been developing OLED technology since 1999 and began manufacturing OLED displays in 2003 but the venture did not manage to become a major player in the market.
