Optima designated as Department of Defence desktop supplier

 • 07 July, 2004 15:57

SYDNEY, Australia – Optima Technology Solutions (ASX:OPI), Australia’s largest computer manufacturer, has been chosen to supply desktop computers and LCD monitors to the Australian Department of Defence for its periodic computer refresh.

Optima has been contracted to supply 6,500 specially customised desktop computers and 1,000 LCD monitors to the Department of Defence (DoD) as part of its “2004 Equipment Refresh Project”, further adding to the 25,000 desktop computers that Optima supplied the Department in its last refresh, 18 months ago.

The Optima desktops were selected after intensive technical evaluations were undertaken by the Department of Defence’s Information Systems Division to ensure the computers successfully met its requirements.

"We believe the Optima desktop computers selected are ideal for the Department of Defence as they offer a good combination of features, performance and value for money,” said Cornel Ung, Managing Director, Optima Technology Solutions. “Optima also has an extensive service network in place to carry out the on-site warranty for our systems, which is one of the capabilities required by Defence.”

The desktop computer selected by the Department is a special configuration that was specifically customised for the DoD, based on Intel architecture. It also incorporates cutting-edge technology such as intrusion detection.

Before being considered for the refresh, this desktop had to successfully test for use with both MS Windows NT Workstation, which is the current Defence operating system, and MS Windows XP Professional, which the Department plans to migrate to in the near future.

"The challenging aspect of this project was that 6,500 desktop computers had to be built, tested, asset-tagged and delivered to the requested Defence sites in accordance with Defence’s strict time schedule . That's a very challenging logistical task for any vendor to achieve, however Optima has been able to supply and deliver our computers ahead of the requested schedule," said Philip Whitmont, Business Development Manager – Defence, Optima Technology Solutions.

About Optima Technology Solutions

Founded in 1989 Optima has grown to become Australia's leading manufacturer of notebook and desktop personal computers, and servers. Headquartered in Sydney, with branch offices in Melbourne and Brisbane, Optima is ideally placed by size and strength to promptly supply and actively support customers through a nationwide supply and service network.
