CA to resell StoreAge virtualization appliance

CA has announced a reseller tie-up with StoreAge to beef up the virtualization and data protection capabilities of its BrightStor storage management software.

CA has announced a reseller tie-up with StoreAge Networking Technologies to beef up the virtualization and data protection capabilities of its BrightStor storage-management software suite, the company announced Monday.

The agreement lets CA fill a hole in its SAN (storage area networking) product portfolio, according to Eric Pitcher, vice president, product management for BrightStor at CA.

Under the terms of the nonexclusive agreement, CA will resell StoreAge's cross-platform Storage Virtualization Manager (SVM) appliance as well as its family of Multi data-protection software alongside BrightStor. CA will offer StoreAge's SVM in two ways -- as a stand-alone product and bundled with BrightStor, Pitcher said in a recent phone interview.

At first, CA and its authorized partners will only resell the StoreAge products in North America and Europe, the Middle East and Africa, because that's where the company is seeing demand for those capabilities, according to Mark Newberry, vice president, product marketing for BrightStor. However, the agreement CA struck with StoreAge does allow the company to resell the products worldwide, he said.

The arrangement with StoreAge is complementary to CA's BrightStor technology in the same way as last year's licensing deal with CaminoSoft and CA's purchase of iLumin, according to Pitcher.

CA licensed CaminoSoft's Managed Server HSM for Windows in July 2005 and rebranded it BrightStor HSM. Then in October, CA announced plans to buy messaging management software vendor iLumin. Pitcher wouldn't comment on whether StoreAge might be a future CA acquisition target.

CA has worked with StoreAge for a number of years and finds the company's technology stance appealing. "They're hardware, application and operating system agnostic, just like us," Pitcher said. As a StoreAge reseller, CA will field all support calls, passing those its staff can't deal with on to StoreAge, he added.

Founded in 1999, privately held StoreAge has its main offices in Irvine, California, and Nesher, Israel. The CA reseller announcement was timed to coincide with the first day of StoreAge's annual worldwide partner conference taking place in Haifa, Israel. Chris Broderick, senior vice president and general manager of CA's BrightStor business unit, is due to be a keynote speaker at the event, according to Newberry.
