Microsoft highlights the web team behind the teams

 • 15 March, 2006 10:00

Melbourne, Australia – 15 March 2006 – Microsoft Australia, the Official Technology Partner for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, together with M2006, the Games organiser, today launched the Official Games website .

The Games website, developed with the Microsoft’s Services team, will give an expected 15 million site visitors access to the medal tally, competitors’ times and results, Games records, forthcoming events and news as it happens from 20 different sporting venues during the 12 day event. The website is expected to attract more than 22 million page views per day from people around the world.

“We’re extremely proud of the website the Microsoft Services team has helped develop with M2006 to keep the world updated on one of the leading international sporting and community events. Their team approach is reflective of the Games’ spirit,” said Mr Steve Vamos, Managing Director, Microsoft Australia.

Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Chairman, Mr Ron Walker, said he was confident that having Microsoft on board would help ensure the Games is first class, for those in Australia and around the world.

“The Microsoft technology will ensure people around the world are kept up-to-date with the latest Games information. Regional sections will allow sports fans from every corner of the Commonwealth to find regularly updated, tailored information on their athletes and nation’s performance,” said Mr Walker.

The highly experienced Microsoft Services team used proven Microsoft technology to reduce the project risk and increase website quality through its Solution Development Centre (SDC), a dedicated engineering facility in Sydney. Development of the website with M2006 used a combination of the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) and “Scrum”, a development methodology that is designed around short iterations and continuous improvement.

As well as M2006, Microsoft worked with its partners, Readify, a technical readiness professional services firm with expertise in .NET development and Microsoft enterprise technologies, and Devtest, a professional testing organisation, to help manage the quality of the website throughout the development cycle.

The Games website was built using the .NET framework with Microsoft’s Content Management Server 2002 as the foundation for the public web experience. This enables Melbourne 2006 (M2006), the Games organiser, to author and publish web content in real time. The servers are running Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2000 to support the content management functions, and SQL Server 2005 to support search and analysis. Microsoft’s BizTalk Server 2004 will integrate large amounts of data into a sophisticated results-scoring system that is 100 per cent accurate and highly robust, and can scale to service large numbers of users, without the need for human intervention. Custom code components were built using Visual Studio 2003.

“The Services team has been delighted to deliver the M2006 project on time and within budget,” said Mr James Simpson, Services Program Manager, Microsoft Australia. “We’ve focused on helping M2006 keep the IT costs for the website to a minimum, reducing data integration time and contributing to the secure and seamless integration of key applications to keep the public informed and engaged.”

Journalists and the media will also benefit from a web-based approach to authoring and publishing stories as they will be provided with 24 hour access to results and information via Microsoft’s popular desktop operating system, Windows XP.

The Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness 4,500 elite athletes from 71 nations take part in the XVIII Commonwealth Games to be held from 15th-26th March, 2006. For further information on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games please go to .
