Acer stamps name all over entertainment Arena

Acer was revealed on Wednesday as the new naming rights holder of the Sydney SuperDome. The venue will now be called the Acer Arena.

Despite getting the naming rights, Acer is not alone in the partnership that was struck with the venue's owner PBL. The deal, whose sum is undisclosed, also involves Intel, which is seeking to promote its Viiv technology through sponsorships and promotions within the arena during major events.

The deal is for five years. The new name takes effect on May 12.

Initially both Acer and Intel will focus on branding. But plans are already afoot to introduce some sort of content distribution.

Intel communication manager Daniel Anderson said Intel was exploring content distribution in several possible ways. This could be in the form of a live stream of a concert. Another could involve attendees entering a password to download and review a show they had just attended.

"We want to take the entertainment here [at Acer Arena] and make it available later [in people's lounge rooms] on Viiv," he said.

Intel launched its Viiv platform last week. PCs with the branded Viiv technology will support high definition TV and video, 7.1 surround sound and will be able to host a number of on-demand applications.

Acer's marketing director Raymond Vardanega said the naming deal will strengthen its brand in the consumer home electronic market.
