McDATA and Fujitsu Team to Achieve Fujitsu's First Intercontinental Data Mirroring

 • 06 April, 2006 14:13

Sydney, Australia. - 6 April 2006 - McDATA Corporation, a leading provider of data networking solutions, today announced that Fujitsu Computer Systems will demonstrate storage based technology that enables the company to replicate data between Colorado Springs, Colo., and Tokyo, Japan, using McDATA's Eclipse(tm) 1620 SAN Routers. The demonstration takes place this week during Storage Networking World (in the Storage Management Solution Centre), and is the first time data has been mirrored between two Fujitsu ETERNUS(tm)6000 storage arrays on separate continents.

"This ability to mirror data between continents addresses the needs of our customers to mirror data centres that are 10,000 or 10 miles apart," said Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing, Fujitsu. "We chose McDATA SAN routers for this ground breaking project because of the company's industry leadership and experience using routers and SAN extension products to replicate data over long distances."

The ability to move data without geographic restrictions demonstrates Fujitsu's commitment to delivering world-class storage solutions to meet its customers' demands. It also provides McDATA with an opportunity to leverage some of the technology being developed by Fujitsu in the United States, particularly for disaster recovery and business continuance solutions.

"McDATA's leadership role in the data networking marketplace put us in a unique position to be a part of Fujitsu's innovative breakthrough," said Todd Oseth, COO, McDATA. "McDATA's SAN router technology allows customers to cost-effectively mirror data over thousands of miles and demonstrates how we mobilise the world's data."

Fujitsu built the data mirroring solution by leveraging the McDATA routers' broad multi-protocol interoperability spanning both Fibre Channel and IP networks. The routers enable Fujitsu to overcome the local limitations of Fibre Channel and take advantage of mirroring data over the Internet. The entire trip spans more than 20,000 circuit miles, with only a 200-millisecond delay, creating nearly instant replication of data.

McDATA's SAN routers also provide data compression to lower WAN bandwidth requirements and Fast Write technology to maximise throughput across long distances. The routers can be deployed for multiple, concurrent applications, including business continuance and disaster recovery, storage consolidation, remote tape vaulting, content distribution, and iSCSI access to Fibre-Channel storage.

About McDATA (
McDATA is the leading provider of storage networking solutions, helping customers build, globally connect, optimise and centrally manage data infrastructures across SAN, MAN and WAN environments. With nearly 25 years experience developing SAN products, services and solutions, McDATA is the trusted partner in the world's largest data centres, connecting more than two-thirds of all networked data.
