Australian Football League selects Microsoft collaboration technology to run its pre-season and rookie draft

Sydney – 12 April 2006 – The Australian Football League (AFL) has embraced online collaboration by conducting its 2006 pre-season and rookie drafts using Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2005.

Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2005, a secure web conferencing service, was used by the AFL and its 16 clubs for the first time this season as a convenient, reliable and cost-effective alternative to the traditional pre-season draft meeting, which is held in Melbourne each year.

The solution saved the AFL and its clubs time and money, cutting out traditional event organisation and logistics, travel and accommodation costs, as well as time spent on the road travelling to conduct the draft.

Mr Tony Abate, AFL IT Manager, said Live Meeting was a quick and effective alternative to face-to-face meetings.

“The AFL saw Live Meeting as a convenient alternative to the traditional conference, as it delivered the exact result we would have achieved if all clubs had to travel to attend the meetings,” said Mr Abate.

“Microsoft Live Meeting was reliable, easy-to-use and the best thing was everyone could get straight back to work once the draft was complete, we’re now considering how we can use it in other parts of our business.”

The Sydney Swans Football Technology Manager, Mr Anthony Cahill, said the ease of use, plus time and money savings were the main benefits of the Live Meeting solution.

“Microsoft Live Meeting was easy to download and use. Our team could watch the pre-season draft via a plasma screen, which made participation easy and ensured that it felt like the Swans were attending the draft in Melbourne,” said Mr Cahill.

“Live Meeting is very effective as a tool to replace a simple meeting. It saved the club time and money by eliminating travel and accommodation costs.

“The football staffs involved in the pre-season draft were pleased with the outcome and we will look at using Live Meeting again in the future.”

Mr Oscar Trimboli, Microsoft Director of Unified Communications, said the AFL has shown how effective Microsoft Live Meeting is at driving business value.

“Microsoft is seeing more and more Australian organisations turn to online collaboration as an alternative to face-to-face meetings or conferences.”

“By giving organisations new ways to do business, Microsoft Office Live Meeting saves money and improves productivity. The AFL shows organisations in all industries can become more productive across cities and time zones using Office Live Meeting,” said Mr Trimboli.

Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2005 is a key piece of Microsoft's vision for unified communication and includes the ability to launch a meeting from within familiar Microsoft Office System, easier and more cost-effective audio controls and powerful presenter control capabilities.

It is available now to all Australian businesses and is also offered by Telstra as a web conferencing service
