HP has placed a worldwide recall on selected removable battery packs used in five HP and Compaq notebook series due to a potential safety hazard.
Locally, the recall only applies to three series, according to a company spokesperson. These are the HP Pavilion dv1000, Compaq Presario V2000 and Compaq M2000.
Users of these models are being asked to check their battery packs for a barcode label starting with L3. HP will replace affected battery packs free of charge.
According to the spokesperson, affected batteries have the potential to overheat, causing the notebook to melt or smoke.
"We've had 20 reports of the batteries overheating and 11 cases of minor property damage around the world, but none in Australia," he said.
According to HP figures, 15,700 batteries have been recalled worldwide, with about a quarter of these in Asia-Pacific.
