Electronic Arts makes Mythic acquisition

Electronic Arts will acquire Mythic Entertainment to expand its presence in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs), EA announced Tuesday.

Mythic created popular games including Dark Age of Camelot, one of the most popular MMORPGs ever. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close at the end of the second quarter of EA's 2007 fiscal year (September 30, 2006). The company will become EA Mythic upon completion of the transaction.

EA's buy continues a trend towards consolidation in the gaming industry. Earlier this year, the company bought mobile game developer Jamdat Mobile for US$680 million. In April, EA rival Sega Holdings U.S.A. made two acquisitions in two days in Europe and the United States to bring more of its game development in-house.

A MMORPG may have millions of players worldwide, with thousands playing simultaneously. They are offered by game publishers or game aggregators for either an hourly playing fee, or for an unlimited monthly subscription.
