Australian Laser Printer Market Reaches Record High, Says IDC

 • 03 July, 2006 10:12

NORTH SYDNEY, 3rd July, 2006 – Australian laser printer market soared to its highest level in a quarter ever, surpassing 90,000 units in Q1 2006, according to IDC Australia's latest printer research.

"The spike in volumes came from low-end single function mono laser printers, which hit a sub-A$200 benchmark in Q4 last year. The recent price reductions by vendors are poised to accelerate further commoditisation of laser printers, boosting uptake by SOHO users," said Rishi Ghai, Analyst, Hardcopy Peripherals, IDC Australia.

"Also notable was the fact that the high volumes were able to offset the 14% drop in the average selling price of mono lasers from the previous quarter to post an estimated 10% sequential growth in revenue. In comparison, even though the single function colour laser shipments were up by 13% from the previous quarter, the corresponding revenue eroded by 2% sequentially," added Mr. Ghai.

The growth in laser printers came against the backdrop of an unusually healthy fourth quarter in 2005. In Q4 2005 there was a marginal sequential growth in laser printer shipments, in contrast to the traditional drop observed in the last quarter of the year. Shipments in Q1 2006 were buoyed by more vendors strengthening their position in the entry-level space, reacting to the price competition.

HP consolidated its rank in the laser printer market with impressive shipments in both mono and colour laser segments in Q1 2006. Lexmark's overall weak performance saw it slip three positions down to fifth. On the other hand, Kyocera Mita, Brother and Samsung moved up one position each to claim second, third and fourth place, respectively.

IDC Top-5 Single Function Laser Printer Vendors, Q1 2006:
# HP: 44.7%
# Kyocera Mita: 14.3%
# Brother: 9.8%
# Samsung: 8.5%
# Lexmark: 7.0%
# Others: 15.7%
