SanDisk SDHC cards climb to 4GB

Earlier this year Panasonic and Toshiba announced 4GB SDHC cards (SDHC -- Secure Digital High Capacity -- being the next generation of SD flash memory), both of which will be available in the coming months.

Sandisk not only announced that they're (just barely) beating Toshiba and Panasonic to the punch with a 4GB SDHC card, they're bundling their MicroMate SD/SDHC USB 2.0 card reader with it, too. (Users will need the reader until more of their devices can handle the seemingly-identical-but-incompatible new format.)

The 4GB SanDisk SDHC bundle is expected to be available in Australia in Q4/2006 with pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.

SDHC is the new designation for SD cards larger than 2GB that adhere to the SD Card Association's SD 2.00 specification. According to SanDisk, because SDHC cards are recognized by new SDHC host devices differently than standard SD cards, it is not backwards compatible with legacy SD format host devices. However, standard SD cards are forward compatible with new SDHC host devices.
