W3C releases draft of updated graphics specification

The W3C has published a draft of an updated graphics standard that lets less-powerful mobile devices use the same graphics as desktop computers.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has published a draft of an updated graphics standard aimed at letting mobile devices display the same graphics as desktop computers.

The specification builds on the W3C's work with SVG (scalable vector graphics), an XML (extensible markup language) format for two-vector graphics and animations.

It's also part of the W3C's Mobile Web Initiative, a project to make mobile Web browsing a similar experience as using a PC. Mobile devices have less processing power and memory than computers so mobile browsing typically offers a more limited experience than using the Internet on a PC.

The specification, SVG Tiny 1.2, adds new capabilities to the format for use in mobile devices. It can accommodate video, audio and scripting plus style-related graphics features such as gradients, stroke and fill opacity and styled text.

The W3C said the specification is suitable for mobile phones, micro PCs, in-car media centers and entertainment consoles in addition to laptops and desktop PCs.

W3C said it expects SVG Tiny 1.2 to be used by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, a coalition of telecommunication standards bodies that develops technical specifications. SVG Tiny 1.2 will now enter a technical evaluation stage outside the W3C and its working groups.

SVG specifications are already used in mobile phone and the Firefox and Opera desktop browsers, W3C said.
