Midware creates subsidiary, calls for resellers

ASX listed software developer, Midware, has created a new subsidiary, Rapid Web Solutions (RWS), to manage and promote its Rapid Web Publisher content management software. The company is also reviewing its reseller strategy with the aim of creating new market opportunities for its range of software management products.

RWS general manager, Nick Nicolaou said there had previously been two arms to the Midware business: practice management software for lawyers and mortgage processes management for the banking sector.

With the new subsidiary, Midware could also rebrand and focus on its content management product suite, he said.

“The decision behind RWS was based on focusing on what we think is a huge opportunity and a growth market in the content and document management space,” he said.

To coincide with the move towards the broader document and content management, Midware is reviewing its existing eight resellers.

Under the proposed changes, some resellers will deal exclusively with the company's legal software, while others will deal with the content management side.

Current resellers include Forsythes IT, IBS Infotech and illumis.

RWS wants to partner with five of Midware’s resellers, maintaining one reseller per state.

The subsidiary would work with these resellers to run a national roadshow and generate leads for the Rapid Web Publisher suite, Nicolaou said.

In the long term, the company would look at moving into the US and Europe markets, he said.

The formation of RWS follows the company's release of a new multi-platform version of Rapid Web Publisher built on Microsoft’s .Net platform.

The company had previously only offered a version of the software for the Lotus Domino platform.

According to Nicolaou, using .Net instead of Domino provided extra features while also making it easier for resellers and Web developers to develop more sophisticated intra, extra and Internet sites.

“From a reseller’s point of view, most have SQL or MS eXchange experience, so it’s a pretty common environment for them,” he said. “There’s less of a training overhead for our product.”

In addition, the .Net platform also solved the question of how to package content management tools to make it easy for resellers to make margin on licensing and services.

“From a packaging perspective it allows for a more sophisticated install process which is easier for vendors to ship out on a CD,” he said.
