Epson shows projector with closed-captioning

At InfoComm this week, Epson's announcement of its US$699 projector has garnered most of the attention. However, also noteworthy is the company's introduction of the US$3199 PowerLite 6100i. Available in July, this hefty, 15-pound-plus XGA model is aimed at education and conference room environments, and has several features that make it particularly friendly to its target environments.

In the education market, notes Epson senior product manager Aaron Marinari, schools need to be ASA508 compliant with closed captioning for playback of video tapes and the like.

"Having closed captioning on the front end really makes sense to them," says Marinari.

Other key design points: This model can be sustained in chalky environments. Epson sealed the crevices around the lens, focus and zoom levers, and connectors, preventing dust and chalk from getting into the optics. The company also dramatically changed the filter design to increase the filter surface area by up to 19 times that of current filters. The filter is electrostatically charged, and the unit has only a single intake, so all of the air that comes into the project has already been cleaned.
