Fuji Xerox Printers Goes Green Again for River Recovery

 • 12 September, 2006 12:23

Improving quality of Hawkesbury-Nepean River system with the planting of 500 trees

SYDNEY, Australia – Tuesday, 12 September, 2006 – Fuji Xerox Printers, the leading provider of quality print solutions, is continuing its ongoing commitment to environmental initiatives, via a partnership with Greening Australia to plant 40,500 native trees and shrubs (equal to 20 hectares of revegetation) in an effort to improve the quality of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River system.

Involving a team of 15 FXP staff members, the planting will occur on Tuesday, 12 September at Melrose Park, Quakers Hill, to rehabilitate a degraded creek, as well as establishing an urban carbon forest in the fight to minimise the impacts of global warming*.

Greening Australia’s River Recovery Program Manager Glen Klatovsky says, “Breakfast Creek lies in the South Creek catchment, which represents one of Australia’s most degraded river systems. Our goal is to improve water quality, add species habitat and have an impact on global warming. We do this in partnership with the community, and in this case, also with the commitment of one of the world’s most high profile companies, Fuji Xerox Printers.”

“We were very impressed with the success of last years’ planting of 8000 trees at Arthursleigh, near Goulburn .The site was badly affected by erosion, causing serious turbidity of water flowing into the nearby Wollondilly River and directly impacting Warragamba Dam, Sydney’s major water source,” Klatovsky continued. “The Arthursleigh site has since experienced outstanding germination in the months following planting; and subsequently enjoyed significant growth over the past year due to mild weather conditions with good rainfall”

Peter Diprose, Regional Environment Manager, Fuji Xerox Printers, said, “While planting is only one of many initiatives FXP undertakes each year to support the environment, it’s certainly one of the most rewarding when we hear of results like this. We are excited to have the opportunity to help restore a damaged river system that is critical to Sydney’s catchment area, particularly when Australia is continuing to experience drought conditions.”

An eco-friendly company, Fuji Xerox Printers achieved the following in 2005 as a result of the company’s environmental initiatives:

- Received GECA ‘Good Environmental Choice’ certification for the DocuPrint C525A, Phaser 8500 and Phaser 8550 colour printers.
- Substantial reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions (79% less CO2 output compared to 2003 levels)
- Tree Planting – 8000 trees and native flora planted during 2005
- Recycled media usage increased to 43% of total paper consumption
- Completed conversion of all fleet vehicles to LPG or 4 cylinder vehicles
- Substantial recycling and reuse of returned packaging materials (93%)

* The planting of trees captures carbon-based gases such as CO2 and converts these to solid form, reducing the greenhouse effect. Additionally, trees planted to maximise native landscapes add to the capacity of these landscapes to cope with the changing weather associated with global warming.
