Unwired to stream optimized wireless

Faster data transfers on the way

Unwired Australia is providing wireless IP optimization tool Venturi Wireless on its customer homepages.

The technology replaces Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) with Venturi Transport Protocol (VTP) which reduces latency over wireless networks by limiting packet re-requests.

Unwired product manager Jeremy Deutsch said the Australian-first technology, which is available to Unwired Broadband customers for free, will make the most noticeable improvement in data streaming.

"[Venturi] is an optimizer rather than an accelerator because it limits [packet] re-requests rather than compressing data which results in reduced quality," Deutsch said.

"Users will see the biggest difference in streaming content which will be delivered much smoother and more consistently than normal [TCP]. Because Venturi is both hardware and software based, we had to build Venturi hardware into our infrastructure, [therefore] only Unwired users can use the technology."

The software is designed to optimize Wimax and pre-Wimax networks and will be available from the end of this month.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
