Symantec Backup Exec 11d Extends Continuous Data Protection to Exchange, Eliminates Daily Backups

 • 16 November, 2006 13:50

Market’s Gold Standard in Windows Data Recovery Also Provides Data Recovery in Seconds, Encryption and Extended Platform Support

AUSTRALIA, Sydney – 16 Nov. 2006 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the leading provider of Windows data protection software, today announced the availability of its Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers software. Developed primarily for small- and medium-sized organisations, Backup Exec 11d expands the product line’s continuous data protection beyond Microsoft Windows file servers and workstations to include Microsoft Exchange, eliminating the need for daily Exchange backups and time consuming mailbox backups.

Backup Exec 11d, available on November 6, 2006, also features an innovative Granular Recovery Technology that enables recovery of critical data from Microsoft applications like Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory and more in just seconds. Additionally, Backup Exec 11d provides enhanced data security with 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption capabilities, and extends platform support with Backup Exec media servers running on x64-bit Windows servers.

“Today’s Windows data protection is not just about backup, it is about recovery,” said Jeremy Burton, group president, Enterprise Security & Data Management, Symantec Corp. “Backup Exec 11d delivers continuous protection for mission-critical Microsoft applications like Exchange and SQL Server, and enables rapid data recovery. This significantly reduces the cost, time, and resources required of small- and medium-sized organisations. Whether customers are backing up to disk, tape, or both, Backup Exec 11d is the Gold Standard for Windows Data Recovery.”

Continuous Protection for Exchange

Symantec Backup Exec 11d extends continuous protection capabilities beyond Windows file servers and workstations to Microsoft Exchange, addressing two key customer demands. First, it eliminates the need to perform daily Exchange backups, greatly simplifying administration and reducing costs for business and IT. Second, it helps deliver e-mail continuity for businesses. Continuous protection for Exchange allows data to be recovered as recently as just a second before a loss.

The new, patent-pending Granular Recovery Technology enables the recovery of individual e-mails, folders, and mailboxes in seconds – without the need for separate mailbox backups. This means IT administrators no longer have to run multiple backup jobs to protect Exchange, effectively cutting backup times in half, or better. Granular Recovery Technology works with either continuous or traditional Exchange data protection methods. Backup Exec 11d also enables the quick recovery of components of other Microsoft applications, including SharePoint Portal Server, Active Directory, and SQL 2005.

“Organisations of all sizes now rely on e-mail applications, such as Microsoft Exchange, as their most mission-critical application. In the event of data loss or corruption, recovering Exchange, especially to the mailbox level, with traditional data protection methods is complex and time-consuming,” said Lauren Whitehouse, analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “The CDP capability in Backup Exec 11d streamlines and provides fine grain recovery of Exchange mailboxes and messages – delivering business continuity and saving time for IT administrators.”

Enhancing Data Security

Organisations are increasingly focusing on the security of the data they are backing up or moving off-site for long-term protection or disaster recovery purposes. Symantec Backup Exec 11d provides 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption to protect data when it is being backed up. Data can either be encrypted at the client-side to ensure protection when moving across a corporate network, or when copied from a disk-based backup to tape media.

Backup Exec 11d extends platform support to full protection of x64-bit Windows environments, adding x64-bit support for Backup Exec media servers to the previously supported x64-bit protected clients or servers. Backup Exec 11d also introduces NDMP support enabling the protection of NetApp® Filers, as well as support for Oracle RMAN/RAC, IBM DB2, MAC OSX (PowerPC), HP-UX, Solaris 10, and SUSE 10.0 Clients.

American Portwell Protects Intellectual Property, Enhances Productivity with Backup Exec 11d

American Portwell is using Symantec Backup Exec 11d to streamline IT processes, centralise backup and recovery for its business critical information, and minimise costs.

Dell has been partnering with Symantec for over five years to deliver Symantec solutions and the synchronous launch of Backup Exec 11d is a testament to a commitment to delivering tightly integrated data protection solutions that drive value for our customers,” said Judy Chavis, director, Dell business development and global alliances. Dell extensively tests and qualifies Symantec Backup Exec 11d on Dell PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage.

“Everyone wants to conduct granular Exchange backups on a regular basis, but up until now, the tools to do that were time-consuming and unfriendly,” said Robert Simpson, chief technology officer and part owner, Systems Design Group, Inc., a Symantec Platinum Partner headquartered in Lexington, KY. “Symantec Backup Exec 11d will allow us to be more efficient when performing this type of Exchange backup, eliminating the time needed to perform individual mailbox backups but still allowing recovery on a granular level. And it handles all aspects of data retention, which is especially important for our clients that need to comply with industry regulations.”
