Independent survey reveals how banking customers rate their service

An independent survey of banking services in New Zealand released its results this October. Just over 50 percent of respondents bank online and commended security measures undertaken by PSIS with the RSA SecurID.

A questionnaire was distributed to a random 12,000 subscribers, where they were asked questions about the bank they use for most of their day-to-day banking, how they rated its performance, internet banking and any problems they may have encountered.

A total of 8260 provided information on their main bank and 4323 provided information on their internet banking. It was revealed that the top performers are TSB or PSIS. They each scored a 98 percent approval rating that their performance was good or very good.
ASB, Kiwibank and National Bank came close behind with 90 to 94 percent approval ratings with a sizeable gap to the other three big banks - BNZ, ANZ and Westpac. They scored between 73 and 82 percent - below the average of 84 percent across all banks.
It was also noticed that online banking has increased steadily from 36 to 50 percent in comparison to the first survey that was conducted back in 2003 where there were also concerns expressed about the security of banking on the internet. However, this survey also reveals that if the banks want more people to use internet banking they need to do a much better job of proving to customers that their current security measures are adequate.

By mid September 2006, PSIS reported a 22 percent activation uptake in the active IB customer base. Another five percent have asked for and received a token but at that stage not yet activated the token.
