New Symantec Survey Reveals Security Doubts Shape Internet Behaviour

 • 24 October, 2006 12:58

Australians more dependent on Internet but still lack confidence in online security

SYDNEY, Australia – Oct. 24 , 2006 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today that more than 50 percent of Australian and New Zealand PC users consider the Internet fundamental to their daily lives but 80 percent of them remain unaware of online threats, according to a survey commissioned by Symantec, to support the National eSecurity Awareness Week. The survey canvassed 28,660 Symantec users in Australia and New Zealand to determine their attitudes toward Internet security.

Some of the key survey findings revealed that:

· More than 60 percent of respondents divulge their personal information monthly to gain access to online services but more than half of them are uncomfortable doing so.

· Less than 15 percent of respondents were confident they could recognise a fraudulent website.

· Nearly half of the respondents access the Internet from home and 26.7 percent used their work computer as well. Only a small percentage used their mobile phone, PDA or games console.

· Less than 10 percent of respondents use online social networks, however, these users tended to be more e-security savvy, with 75.9 percent using two or more identities to protect themselves online.

· Forty-eight percent of respondents committed their passwords to memory and only about three percent of users use password software.

“ According to Symantec's recent Internet Security Threat Report, home users are a prime target for attackers seeking financial gains and online threats are constantly evolving. Consumers should take precautions when it comes to online security. Online fraud is a criminal attempt to steal personal and/or financial information for the purposes of financial gain and phishing is a type of online fraud that typically uses e-mail with a call to action to a fake website, which collects confidential information. To give Internet users the peace-of-mind and confidence to bank, shop or conduct other sensitive transactions online, Symantec recently introduced Norton Confidential, the world's first comprehensive transaction security solution that combines protection from phishing sites and crimeware. To help users store and secure their passwords, Norton Confidential uses multiple layers of protection such as password-based authentication and encryption as well as other exclusive technologies. Norton Confidential is not only easy to use but lets consumer know if it is safe to proceed online,” said David Sykes, vice president, Pacific region, Symantec Corporation.

“The Government’s National eSecurity Awareness Week initiative is a step forward in businesses and the government coming together to build confidence and trust online for consumers. This is very much in line with Symantec‘s vision for Security 2.0 where we are focused on protecting online interactions, and our information secure and available for consumers. We are very pleased to support this national initiative,” Sykes added.
