Adaptec Launches Flexible Storage Architecture Allowing a Mix & Match Approach for External Storage Solutions

 • 03 December, 2004 12:05

IBM First to Adopt

Sydney, Australia - December 3, 2004 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today announced the Australian availability of Adaptec Flexible Storage Architecture (FSA), a modular platform based on industry-standard, pre-developed and interoperable components, systems and software that partners can mix and match to deliver to the end user a full range of unique storage solutions from simple arrays to highly available enterprise systems. IBM is the first major vendor to ship storage solutions based on Adaptec FSA with its new TotalStorage DS300 and DS400.

"The Adaptec FSA system clearly shows the company's commitment to building an even stronger OEM and channel business," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "The building-block approach gives Adaptec and its customers, such as IBM, greater flexibility for bringing products to market with unique, differentiated feature sets. I expect we'll be seeing much more from this product line."

Adaptec FSA allows the company to address a $10 billion storage market that is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 16.5 percent 1 through its components, systems, software or any combination of these elements. It is a purpose-built storage platform that provides a menu of pre-tested, pre-qualified interchangeable "building blocks" that allow customers to quickly and cost-effectively design best-of-breed external storage solutions based on their specific business needs ranging from “Just a Bunch of Disks” (JBODs) up through fabric-attached, highly available solutions containing a powerful suite of advanced storage software.

Depending on the components, systems and software selected, a variety of price, performance and availability levels can be created while saving significant development time and effort. Since Adaptec FSA is modular, opportunities to drive additional revenue, product differentiation or upgrades are easily handled incrementally and on demand through plug-and-play components, storage capacity or simple software keys providing access to advanced software features and applications such as virtualisation, snapshots, replication and mirroring.
"Adaptec FSA provides our partners with the design flexibility no other technology vendor can match, enabling them to significantly reduce development cycles, while increasing product value," said Demetri Christodoulou, Adaptec regional manager Australia, New Zealand & South Asia. "Adaptec has successfully integrated industry-proven components and software for designing purpose-built storage systems. The Adaptec FSA development platform provides customers with a powerful partner in the industry."

Through its basis of interchangeable building blocks, Adaptec FSA delivers the versatility of customised products with powerful software-based differentiation along with the benefits of centralised storage management combined with the simplicity and cost-savings of off-the-shelf products. It reduces the complexities of traditional storage solutions while delivering investment protection for emerging technologies. Adaptec FSA can also be used to quickly meet customer business requirements as they change. The range of plug-and-play upgrade options offer simple, on-demand storage capacity expansion, faster drives, additional solution-oriented software functionality or even major migrations from direct-attached storage (DAS) to network-attached storage (NAS) or storage area networks (SANs). Adaptec FSA consists of:

• Components - Adaptec provides more than 20 years of experience in developing components, ASICs, RAID Controllers and boards and is consistently a leader in terms of high performance and market availability of advanced technology. The company's components and systems span multiple storage topologies to provide a wide range of solutions: Serial ATA, SCSI, iSCSI, Fibre Channel and Serial Attached SCSI-based ASICs, RAID on Chip (ROC), RAID controllers and boards;

• Systems - Adaptec offers a variety of enclosures and arrays for plug-and-play components. Adaptec systems include SCSI, Serial ATA, Fibre Channel and Serial Attached SCSI drives within 1U, 2U and 3U enclosures, hot-swappable RAID arrays and power/cooling, as well as Fibre Channel, iSCSI, SAS and SCSI host connectivity;

• Software - Adaptec FSA software includes industry-proven RAID data protection, virtualisation, mirroring, snapshot and backup/recovery. Moving forward, additional software from the Snap Appliance acquisition as well as third-party value-added solutions will also be integrated. These capabilities are also available as an upgrade through easy-to-use, on-demand software keys that allow organisations to add applications and capabilities as their storage needs change.

• Management Software - Integrated Adaptec Storage Management Software gives IT managers a common graphical interface for managing all Adaptec-powered solutions across different storage infrastructures including DAS to NAS to SAN.
