Versatile all-in-one bargain

Success in the PC and notebook markets has seen Dell branch out into the printer market in hopes of building the same level of brand awareness. This latest offering is priced very competitively in comparison to other multi-function devices (MFDs) available. Incor-porat-ing scan, copy, fax and print functions, the 922 is an affordable solution at $199 for any small business or home office user.

The printer software was extremely easy to install and is very intuitive once up and running. It connects to a PC using USB 2.0. Small menus and links take all the guesswork out of tasks, allowing you to get the job done with minimal fuss. Testing of the sample unit revealed the 922 can output 19ppm in black and 14ppm in colour, and reproduces colour adequately. An additional photo cartridge can also be purchased to produce finer and more accurate colour representation for 4x6in photos.

Worried about running out of ink during large print jobs? The 922 has built-in ink management software and monitors levels of ink, warning you when the cartridges are low and need to be replaced. An integrated software tool provides links to the Dell Web site to purchase new cartridges; you need not even leave the house, as the supplies can be delivered directly to your door.

The top of the unit folds back to reveal the interior. As with a car bonnet, a small plastic stand holds the top section in place, but we found it to be a slight hindrance while trying to install the cartridges.

Overall, this cost-effective solution is likely to appeal to home users as much as it should to SMEs.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
