CES - New recordable optical media inundates CES

Maxell and TDK will announce at CES new discs for HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and DVD, they said Sunday.

Some of the world's largest manufacturers of blank optical-disc media are using the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that began in Las Vegas on Sunday to announce new discs for DVD, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

Maxell will begin selling four types of HD DVD and four types of Blu-ray Disc media in the first quarter of this year: both single-layer and dual-layer versions of write-once and rewritable media. The single and dual-layer discs can hold 15G bytes and 30G bytes, respectively. The Blu-ray Discs can hold 25G bytes and 50G bytes, respectively. Maxell said pricing for all eight discs will be announced in late January.

Maxell will offer camcorder users a new double-sided DVD (DVD DS) that can store 30 minutes of video on each side of the 8-centimeter disc, it said. The write-once DVD-R DS and rewritable DVD-RW DS discs requires flipping in order to use the other side. For consumers who don't want to flip the disc the company will launch single-sided DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL dual-layer discs that can store 54 minutes of video.

TDK, which is already shipping single-layer Blu-ray Discs, said it will begin shipping dual-layer discs "early this year." It will also start shipping in April 2007 versions of BD-R (Blu-ray Disc Recordable) discs with thermal and ink-jet printable labels.

The company will also use CES to highlight its prototype 200G-byte Blu-ray Disc. The six-layer disc expands the storage capacity on each recording layer from the current 25G bytes to 33.3G bytes.

CES runs from Monday until Thursday.
