Extreme retail technology extends POS capabilities without slowing mission-critical transaction processing using Intel® vPro™ technology

SYDNEY – NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) has announced the NCR RealPOS 80XRT point-of-sale (POS) workstation, designed to extend POS capabilities without slowing mission-critical transaction processing. Featuring next-generation architecture with support for advanced Intel vPro technology, the NCR RealPOS 80XRT delivers industry-leading power, scalability and systems management capabilities to the point of service.

Andrew Regan, Vice President, South Pacific Asia, NCR Retail/Hospitality and Self-Service Solutions, said: “The RealPOS 80XRT Workstation is ideal for all markets, especially Australia and New Zealand, where stores are expanding their chains rapidly and looking for solutions that meet their mission-critical transaction processing needs.

“Today, retailers need to run multiple applications simultaneously at the point of service, including critical store operation functions and customer-centric applications that enhance the shopping experience.

“NCR’s extreme retail technology enables business agility, providing the performance and scalability to protect the retailer’s investment for the future.”

The NCR RealPOS 80XRT delivers industry-leading power and scalability through a range of single-core and dual-core processors, including the new Intel Core™2 Duo processor. In addition, the NCR RealPOS 80XRT features enhanced systems management capabilities using Intel vPro technology to increase uptime and help drive down retailer’s total cost of ownership. Specifically, Intel Active Management Technology provides a dedicated communications channel that enables “out-of-band” remote management of the NCR RealPOS 80XRT, even if the operating system is down or the workstation is turned off.

“NCR is a leader in utilising Intel vPro technology at the point of service, applying the performance of Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the remote management capabilities of Intel vPro technology to today’s dynamic retail environment,” said Ton Steenman, vice president, Digital Enterprise Group, and general manager, Infrastructure Processor Division at Intel Corporation. “With powerful energy-efficient performance and the ability to execute multiple tasks at once without slowing down, the Intel Core 2 Duo processor at the heart of the NCR RealPOS 80XRT enables powerful new retail applications to execute simultaneously.”

“The RealPOS 80XRT is ideal for customer intelligence programs, streaming-video ads and graphics-rich promotions. When configured as both a POS workstation and a server, it can run back-office applications in addition to front-end POS software without slowing down mission-critical transaction processing,” Regan added.

“Additionally, the workstation/server configuration can reduce the in-store infrastructure by eliminating the need for server hardware.”

The NCR RealPOS 80XRT runs on the latest Microsoft operating systems, including Microsoft Windows® Embedded for Point of Service, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Embedded, and will offer future support for Windows Vista. NCR will also offer SUSE® Linux Enterprise for Point of Service from Novell.
